This document covers the maximum service life limit of all common gas cylinders and the regular inspection regulations for different gas cylinders. The references are the Second Edition of Gas Cylinder Filling and Safety and the new Supervision Regulation on Gas Cylinder Safety Technology (TSG_R0006-2014), the two latest industrial and national standards.

In China, all gas cylinders are subject to the maximum use limit. After expiration, whether they are used or in good condition, they must be scrapped compulsorily. According to the latest national standards, the specific classifications are as follows:

Note 1:

1) The steel cylinders manufactured in accordance with the provisions of Liquefied Petroleum Gas Cylinders (GB5842-1996) have a design service life of 15 years from the date of delivery, and will be scrapped after 15 years.。

2) The steel cylinders manufactured in accordance with the provisions of the national standard GB5842-2006 Steel Cylinders for Liquefied Petroleum Gas shall have a design service life of 8 years from the date of delivery, and shall be compulsorily scrapped after 8 years.

All cylinders shall be subject to periodic inspection after delivery. Different cylinders have different periodic inspection cycles. According to the latest national standards, the specific categories are as follows:

Treatment for exceeding the design service life

Cylinders whose service life exceeds their design service life shall generally be scrapped. The compressed natural gas cylinders installed by taxis shall be scrapped when their service life reaches 8 years; Vehicle gas cylinders shall be scrapped together with taxis. Welding insulated gas cylinders (including welding insulated gas cylinders for vehicles) shall be scrapped if their thermal insulation performance cannot meet the requirements for use and cannot be repaired. For cylinders with unclear design service life, the design service life specified in the above table shall be taken as the basis for scrapping.

For liquefied petroleum gas cylinders with a design service life of 8 years, the service life can be extended only once after safety assessment, and the extended service life shall not exceed one inspection cycle of the cylinder. For liquefied petroleum gas cylinders without specified design service life, those with a service life of 15 years shall be scrapped and their use functions shall be eliminated.

Early inspection

In case of any of the following conditions in the use of gas cylinders, regular inspection shall be carried out in advance:

(1) Serious corrosion, damage or doubt of its safety and reliability;

(2) The winding layer of the winding cylinder is seriously damaged;

(3) Used after the inventory or downtime exceeds one inspection cycle;

(4) The motor vehicle is put into use again after the occurrence of a traffic accident that may affect the safe use of the vehicle cylinder;

(5) Other situations that require periodic inspection in advance as specified in the cylinder inspection standard and that the inspector (or filling personnel) deems it necessary to conduct inspection in advance.

Treatment before gas cylinder inspection

Before regular inspection of gas cylinders, the residual gas in the cylinders shall be recovered and treated. Recycling and disposal shall at least meet the following requirements:

(1) The residual gas in the cylinder containing toxic and combustible gas shall be recycled in an environmentally friendly manner and shall not be discharged into the atmosphere;

(2) The cylinder valve can only be removed after confirming that the pressure in the cylinder drops to zero;

(3) The cylinder containing combustible gas must be replaced; Cylinders containing liquefied petroleum gas and other flammable liquefied gases shall be purged by steam or treated internally by other methods that do not damage the cylinder materials or reduce the performance of the cylinder materials to meet the specified safety requirements, otherwise, it is prohibited to use compressed air for air tightness test.

Inspection items and requirements

(1) The items and requirements for regular inspection of various gas cylinders shall comply with the relevant safety technical specifications and the corresponding national standards;

(2) The periodic inspection of gas cylinders shall be carried out one by one, and the gas cylinders or cylinder valves found to have been welded, repaired, patched, disassembled or renovated during the inspection shall be scrapped;

(3) The regular inspection institution of gas cylinders shall ensure that the qualified gas cylinders and gas cylinder valves can safely use for one inspection cycle under normal use. The gas cylinders that cannot safely use for the next inspection cycle shall be scrapped. The cylinder valves that cannot be safely used to the next inspection cycle shall be replaced.

Inspection records and reports

The regular inspection institution of gas cylinders shall carefully fill in the inspection records, and shall issue a cylinder inspection report to the qualified or scrapped gas cylinders after the inspection. The inspection records and reports shall be true and accurate.

Eliminate the use of functional processing

The unit designated by the local geological supervision department shall be responsible for eliminating the use function of scrapped gas cylinders. The irreparable methods such as flattening or disassembling the bottle body shall be used to eliminate the use function, and drilling or destroying the thread of the bottle mouth shall not be used.
